Distance education
When take an online course, you will be able to make up your own study schedule, and you will be able to receive lecture notes and other information from instructors who will post them on the class web site. Each course will have its own message board that you can retrieve your assignments from, talk to instructors and classmates, and ask questions when you have them. Many times, you will be asked to participate in classroom discussions. These discussions will begin at a certain time and you can look at them when you have the time. Classes are asynchronous, which means that they are not set for any particular time. If you instructor sets up a classroom discussion time, you can join the class or read the message board later on to find out what was said and add any insights you may have. This is a good tool that people can use to learn from their classmates. Some online learning programs do not give a set time when assignments will be due, while other programs insist that assignments be turned in by a certain time. You will be responsible for reading the materials from books you will have to purchase for the class as you would in a class room setting, but you can choose when you want to study and for how long.
