Education

This is one of the most difficult lessons that freshmen will learn during their first year of college. While you may want to do well in your classes, you will also have more free time than you ever imagined. Your parents are not around, you can leave campus any time you want, and you don’t have a curfew. Many students take advantage of this free time and end up paying for it by failing classes or barely passing their first year of college. You will have to learn how to balance your study schedule and your social schedule so that you will pass your classes, and still have fun going to sporting events, parties, and other social activities. Many times, you will have to choose whether to study or to go out. While you should give yourself a break sometimes, you need to be firm about going out during the week. This can be extremely difficult especially if you are involved in extracurricular activities. After your first semester, you will be able to gauge how much time you will need to study, be with friends, and the amount of time you need to just be alone. Living in a dorm does not allow for a lot of privacy. You may need to take walks, drive your car, or have a meal alone in order to cope. It is very easy to get caught up in the social activities that are going on around you. It will seem everywhere you look, something will be happening. While this can be exciting, you will need to find time to study and complete assignments. While your first few weeks at school can be intimidating, you will begin to understand why college can be one of the best times in your life. Enjoying the freedom to make decisions, learning new and interesting ideas and theories, and making new friends is all part of the overall experience. Once you have been in college for a while, you will start to appreciate it even more.
